Want to truly engage people ? Then manage them by exception !

The text below in German is the first part of the transcript of a contribution about multicultural management and what it means in the context of globalization, demographic change and the coexistence of multigenerational workforces and subcultures.

The contribution was originally presented at the RWF Rheingauer Wirtschaftsforum 2015 (RWF Rheingau economic forum 2015).

The complete paper will help you understand how to get from managing people in a multicultural working context to truly engaging them and why it is important to do so.

I believe that companies must move beyond accepting cultural identities and differences to leveraging them for competitive advantage, superior performance and creative growth. Companies no longer only have to manage, but also to engage their multicultural and multigenerational teams. For those who will be able to do that, their workforce will become a real competitive advantage and no longer be seen as an expense or a rare resource.

Truly engaging people and teams implies managing them by exception in the sense the concept is understood in Gallup's "First break all the rules". In short, it means becoming a catalyst for talents and applying the platinum rule "treat others the way they want to be treated". In my contribution I discuss how to apply the platinum rule and reflect on what it implies in relation with classical people management to treat every employee as a unique variable.

Reading the complete paper will help you:

  • learn how to develop your cultural awareness to be able to manage multicultural and multigenerational teams

  • understand at what conditions people do truly feel engaged in their company, which is the ultimate key to employee and talent retention, better work and better company results

  • know how to engage people through Management by Exception and how to develop the managing abilities and skills you need to do that.
